The portal and access
What is AI Challenge Portal?
A critical-thinking practice platform. A student works through a challenge as a structured conversation with an AI agent: questions, evidence, explanations and revision. A separate judge tracks progress and produces a score and report that teachers can read. Full docs
Who is the beta for?
Four roles are live: institution administrator, teacher, student and independent learner. Get started by role
Is there a minimum age?
Yes, 13. Accounts with a date of birth under 13 are refused. If you are under 18, or under the age of majority where you live, use the portal only with a parent's or guardian's permission or through your school. Some challenges also carry an age rating and are shown only to people who meet it. Terms: who may use the Service
Can I sign myself up?
Not on your own in the beta. A student signs up with a class code from their teacher. Teachers, institution staff and independent learners have accounts created for them by an administrator. Student sign-up
Is there a cost?
Pricing has not been published. The Terms say the service is currently provided without charge during the beta, and that if paid plans are introduced, prices are published before anyone is charged and no one is charged without their or their institution's agreement. For anything else, contact us. Terms: fees
Does sharing a portal link give someone access?
No. A link sends a signed-out person to sign in, and someone without the right role or access to that record does not see it. Sharing links
The AI and scoring
Am I talking to a person?
No. The challenge partner, the evaluation and the teacher assistant are AI systems. People (teachers, institution administrators and platform administrators) review reports and safeguard flags. Terms: AI features
How is a challenge scored?
After each student turn a judge checks the conversation against the challenge's checkpoints. The session ends when every required checkpoint is met, or after 12 student turns. A judge then decides pass or fail, gives a score from 0 to 100 and writes feedback; each step of the problem also earns its own credit. How a challenge runs
Are scores official grades?
No. Scores and reports are not certified assessments or grades. A school decides whether and how to use them. Terms: AI features
Is my work used to train AI models?
No. Conversations, evaluations, teacher-assistant requests and framework-assistant documents are not used to train or fine-tune AI models, and AI providers are configured or contracted not to use them for training either. Your name and email are not sent to the AI, but whatever you type is, so leave personal details out of your answers. Privacy: AI processing
Why is the AI slow, or saying it is busy?
Replies can take up to two minutes during the beta. When the service is busy, your message is sent again automatically; after three tries it comes back in the box so you can send it again shortly. AI work can also be paused during a provider outage or for the rest of the day when a daily platform limit is reached (it clears at midnight UTC). Nothing you wrote is lost. Running a challenge
Privacy and safety
Who can see a student's conversations?
The student, their teachers, their institution's administrators and a small number of platform administrators who operate the service. Some access, such as opening a report or a safeguard flag, is recorded in an access log. Privacy: who can see your information
What happens if a student discloses self-harm, abuse or serious distress?
The session pauses and a safeguard flag goes to the teacher who set the work and the institution's administrators (for an independent learner, to platform administrators) for review. The portal is not an emergency or crisis service and does not contact emergency services, parents or guardians. Privacy: safeguarding
Where is data stored?
The application, database and backups are hosted by Hetzner in Helsinki, Finland (EU). AI requests are processed by the AI providers listed in the Privacy Policy. Privacy: service providers
Do you use tracking cookies?
No. The portal uses only the storage it needs to run or to remember a setting you chose, and no advertising or cross-site tracking cookies. Privacy: cookies and browser storage
What does "beta" mean for me?
Features may be incomplete, change or be withdrawn, so keep your own copy of anything important. The beta scope table lists what is live and what is planned. Current beta scope
Getting help
How do I get help or ask a question?
Use the contact form and pick the closest category, including Technical support and Privacy. Inside the student portal, the menu also has Feedback. If you think your account has been compromised, report it through the contact form.
Institution administrators
Institution
People and access
How do I add a teacher or student?
In Institution users choose New user. Display Name and Email are required (email cannot change later), Role is Teacher or Student, and date of birth is optional. A temporary password is shown once; send it only to that person, who sets a new one at first sign-in. Adding a user
Do I have to create every student account?
No. A student who signs up with a teacher's class code gets an account on that teacher's roster without admin involvement. The people in your institution
What does "Needs attention" mean on a user?
The portal has a record for the person but no sign-in is connected yet. Use Connect to Authentication module (or Resync roles) from the row menu rather than creating a duplicate. The people in your institution
How do I give someone teacher or admin rights?
Add or remove a membership on your institution's page. Changes apply immediately, and one person can hold several roles, such as Teacher and institution administrator. Your institution and its members
How do I stop someone's access without deleting them?
Deactivate them. Their sign-in is turned off while memberships and history are kept, and Reactivate turns it back on. Withdrawing access
Can we change the inactivity sign-out?
Yes. On the institution details page set Inactivity sign-out to 5 to 720 minutes; leave it empty to use the platform default (60 minutes). It applies to students and staff. Your institution and its members
Data and requests
A student or parent asked us to delete their data. What do I do?
Use Erase personal data on the person's row. Their sign-in, name, email, date of birth, conversation text, feedback and notes are replaced with placeholders; scores and counts stay in anonymous form. Erasure is permanent and logged. Move a teacher's classes and templates first. Erasing personal data
What can staff see of a learner's progress?
Staff see XP and mastery from runs whose reports they can open. There is no ranking or leaderboard. Reading your navigation panel
Can we import state or district assessment results?
Not in the beta. It can be turned on for an institution by arrangement once a data processing agreement is on file; teachers and students never see imported results. Assessment results
Setup and integrations
Does it work with our LMS?
LTI 1.3 launch is supported for common LMSs. It is off by default and available only when configured and enabled by arrangement. Without it, teachers use class codes. Integrations
Can we use our own standards framework?
Yes. In Catalog, import a CASE CFPackage or catalog JSON file into your institution; it stays private to your institution and is available at once. The framework assistant can draft the file from a standards document. To ask for a framework you do not have, use Request a framework or assessment. Your frameworks
Can I post an announcement to my institution?
Yes. Banners show scheduled Info, Warning or Critical announcements to the people and roles you choose. Announcements
What is not available yet for institutions?
Email invitations, bulk import of users (from a CSV file or a student information system), institution-wide dashboards and institution-level report export are not built yet. Current beta scope

Getting started
What is the fastest way to run my first challenge?
Open Templates, set Show to Platform library and assign a ready-made challenge as it is. Nothing needs copying first. Choosing from the library
How do students join my class?
Open the key icon on a roster's row and generate a class join code; share the code or its join link, with an optional expiry and maximum uses. Rotate replaces the code and Disable revokes it immediately. Rosters
Can I write my own challenge?
Assignments
What can I control on an assignment?
Who it is for (one student or a roster), a chain of published challenges, the maximum student turns, the support mode, an optional theme and Open At / Close At dates, which the portal enforces. Assignments
What are the support modes?
Guided (the default) shows the steps as students go and allows hints. Standard hides the steps until the report but allows hints. Challenge shows no steps and gives no hints. Unless you turn it off, students can step down to Guided during a run, never up. Assignments
Does a theme change how students are graded?
No. A theme wraps the story the agent tells but never changes the constraints or goal and never reaches the judge, so grades stay comparable across themes. Assignments
Can I change a challenge after publishing it?
A published version cannot be edited. Publish a new version; existing assignments keep the version they were given. Publishing a version
Reports, scoring and safety
What is in a session report?
The overall score and summary, dimension scores with a rationale each when enabled, the steps with their credit, a mastery band and the transcript. Reading a session report
How are steps credited and mastery banded?
Each step earns credit on its own: full credit without a hint, less for each hint level, and some credit for a real start. Bands run Beginning, Developing, Proficient and Mastered. Reading a session report
Is an abandoned session graded?
Yes, as a partial attempt, if the student sent at least one response. One abandoned before any answer has no report. Reading a session report
How do safeguard flags reach me?
In the Safeguard flags list, the dashboard count and your in-app notifications. Open the flag, read the transcript, then Clear or Escalate it with notes. The beta sends no email, so agree a local process for checking flags. Safeguard flags
Does the AI detect bad language or cheating?
The AI's own detection covers safeguarding disclosures only, not inappropriate language or academic-integrity concerns. Separately, a message blocked by the AI service's content filter raises a flag for review. Safeguard flags
The teacher assistant and your account
What does the teacher assistant do?
Beside the template editor it suggests a challenge type, drafts the challenge and can propose steps, labels and alignments. It never saves, publishes or changes anything by itself, only your Confirm and save does, and it will not write a worked answer for students. It has a daily message limit (100 per person by default). The teacher assistant
Will I get email notifications?
No. Notifications are in-app only, under the bell, and you cannot yet choose which ones you receive. Notifications
How do I get my account or a student's account deleted?
Ask your institution administrator; there is no delete button for teachers or students. Deletion requests
What is not available yet for teachers?
Programs, bulk operations, exports and more challenge types are planned. Current beta scope

My school gave me a temporary password. What now?
Sign in with it and set a new password; the temporary one then stops working. If you did not get one, use Forgot password? No one in the portal can see your password. Signing in
How do I join another class?
Choose Join a class in the menu and enter the code, or open your teacher's join link. Joining another class
Doing a challenge
Why can't I start a challenge marked with an age, like "Age 16+"?
It is rated above your age, or your account has no date of birth. Ask your teacher if you think that is wrong. Reading your dashboard
How many tries do I get?
Two attempts at each challenge, and up to five new challenges a day (the day resets at midnight UTC). Running a challenge
Can I stop and come back later?
Yes. Your session saves as you work. Choose Pause, or just leave, and use Resume on the dashboard. Pausing and picking up again
How do I get a hint?
Choose I'm stuck; the agent's next reply includes the hint. Hints count toward your total and are not offered in Challenge mode. Hints
What happens when I run out of turns or time?
The challenge ends and is scored on the work you have done. Running a challenge
My message was blocked. What does that mean?
The AI service's content filter stopped it and passed it to a person to review. Your message comes back in the box, and you can choose Resume and carry on. If something is worrying you, talk to someone you trust. Running a challenge
Results and progress
How is my work scored?
Every step earns credit on its own, so part of a problem still counts. Your report shows a score, a summary, a mastery band (Beginning, Developing, Proficient or Mastered) and what to practice next. Reading a finished run
What are XP, levels and badges?
XP comes from step credit and grows faster on harder challenges and modes. There are 8 levels, from Curious to Sage, that never go down, and badges for each challenge type. Nobody is ranked against you. Track your progress
Who can read my conversations?
